The remnants of Tropical Storm Ernesto capped off a summer filled with extreme weather in Westchester and Hudson Valley.
Many thought the heavy winds and rain on Saturday were nothing compared to the kind of weather residents had to brave this summer. In June, streets in Port Jervis were under several feet of water after a heavy rainstorm caused the Delaware River to surge. July brought a tornado to Westchester that destroyed buildings, ripped trees out of the ground and smashed car windows.
The tornado was followed by severe thunderstorms that left neighborhoods littered with downed trees and power lines. A heat wave in August forced hundreds of seniors to find refuge in cooling centers throughout Westchester and Hudson Valley.
Many residents decided to enjoy the Labor Day weekend, despite Ernesto. They say the severe weather is nothing new.
