Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez held for the first time Saturday a town hall in Co-op City.

Ocasio-Cortez got to spend some time with a new group of people she now represents in the borough.

The area was previously part of Rep. Jamaal Bowman's congressional district, but with the maps being redrawn for the 2022 elections, Ocasio-Cortez's area now has the northeastern part of the Bronx also.

She got to meet the full range of supporters who cheered and clapped for her when she was first introduced. A group of around 10 people sang and held signs asking to stop sending weapons to Ukraine and to avoid war with Russia and China about a minute after she started talking.

While Ocasio-Cortez spent time talking about national issues like the debt ceiling and immigration, she also went back and forth with some people over Social Security. She also answered questions about public housing and local infrastructure.

"This is my way of trying to find out who she is, and she's new to us, and let's see what's going on," said Co-op City resident Ramon Nevers.

"Co-op City is such a special community. One of the things we've been diving in right away is the really unique energy and electrical needs around here, but there's just a difference between doing something in person in community when we can have those one-on-one conversations, versus just seeing things through a screen," Ocasio-Cortez said.

Ocasio-Cortez office said that she wants to hold town halls about once a month, usually alternating between Queens and the Bronx. Information on those future meetings can be found on her social media accounts.
