The state comptroller's office released a report on the conditions of bridges throughout New York Tuesday, citing the Tappan Zee Bridge as one in need of urgent improvements.
Comptroller Tom DiNapoli says the state Department of Transportation hasn't done a good job maintaining New York bridges.
"The DOT did not address one third of the serious highway defects," he says.
DiNapoli expressly cited the Tappan Zee Bridge, saying if it failed or was partially closed, the impact would be severe.
A spokesperson for the Thruway Authority, which is responsible for the Tappan Zee Bridge, says the state is working hard to develop a plan for a new bridge.
