Rescue crews save suicidal bridge jumper
Rescue crews were able to save the life of 40-year-old man attempting to commit suicide by jumping off the Tappan Zee Bridge Saturday.
Police say the man leapt 175 feet off the bridge into the Hudson River. Responders from a Tarrytown rescue unit hit the scene and pulled the man out of the water.
"When I heard him moaning?I realized he was alive," says volunteer firefighter Kelly Murphy. "That's when I jumped in."
EMS crews took the man, who police are not identifying, to the hospital. He is currently in stable condition and recovering at Westchester Medical Center.
Fire officials say there's an increase in suicide attempts at the start of the holiday season. There are signs posted on the bridge to deter people from jumping as well as telephones to call for help.
