Rescuers are recounting an amazing story of survival involving a very small dog trapped for five days inside a crevice at the Minnewaska State Park.
Liza fell about 40 feet down a narrow crevice, and after multiple days and multiple attempts, Jessica Van Ord, with the New Jersey Initial Response Team, was the only person small enough to fit between the narrow rocks.
"It wasn't consistent, it wasn't a matter of, ‘Can I fit through this big?’ It was, ‘Can I fit through something shaped like this and make it to the other side?’” she says.
By the time Van Ord made her attempt, little Liza had been down there for five days. They weren't sure she was still alive until they used a plumber's camera to peer into the depths and saw her licking water off the walls.
While they were happy that she was alive, they still had the task of getting her out.
Van Ord eventually lassoed Liza, bagging her up and getting her back to the surface and back to her owner.
Liza had a vet appointment Thursday and other than losing some weight, got a clean bill of health.
News 12 also spoke to the park superintendent. He said this experience is a good reminder to always leash your dogs.
