Saturday marked National Wreaths Across America Day, with millions of volunteers gathering nationwide to honor those who sacrificed for the country.

In Mount Vernon, veterans, families and youth cadets came together at historic St. Paul’s Church to lay wreaths and reflect on the meaning of freedom.

Members of Westchester Squadron 1 of the Civil Air Patrol played a central role in the ceremony, honoring each branch of the military and individual service members, some dating back to the Civil War. Cadet Major Tanisha Alilaikannan spoke about the ideals on which the nation was founded and the responsibility to recognize those who defended them.

Organizers say involving young cadets helps keep history alive, ensuring future generations understand the sacrifices behind the freedoms they enjoy.
