A 16-year-old student is facing a gun possession charge after a scare inside a Brooklyn high school during the school day.

The incident happened just after 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology on Broadway in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Officials say a call came in about a student who may have had a gun. Staff and school safety officers quickly stepped in, and the student was found with a firearm and taken into custody.

No one was hurt.

The Department of Education says weapons have no place in schools and that the item was recovered quickly. The agency says extra support and security will be in place for the school community in the coming days.

Sources tell News 12 the gun was found inside the student’s backpack in the cafeteria. That detail has not been officially confirmed.

The incident is also raising questions about security. We’re told the school does not have scanners, something that could now become part of a broader conversation.

Students are expected back in class Wednesday morning as the investigation continues.
