Ritual organizers fined over 11,000 dead chickens
Rockland?s Department of Health is fining the organizer of a religious ritual that left the remains of 11,000 chickens in a Monsey parking lot back in September.
The ritual, performed by Hasidic Jews prior to Yom Kippur, involves individuals holding live chickens over their heads and symbolically transferring their sins to the birds. The chickens are then slaughtered. However, health officials say that the remains were left in the parking lot of the old Rockland drive-in movie theater where the ritual was held.
Health officials hit the organizer with a $3,000 fine for the mess
It wasn?t the only time the ceremony has drawn negative attention. Back in 2006, the Humane Society complained to organizers about what they considered to be poor conditions the chickens were kept in prior to the ritual. The two sides worked together in 2007 to improve conditions, but the health department says it still plans to enforce the fine.
