Multiple Long Island school districts are likely to see changes in staffing next year. The Riverhead School District has proposed cutting nearly 40 teaching positions. As News 12 has reported, the Amityville School District is in the midst of dozens of employee layoffs, and the West Babylon School District could have potential cuts due to a decline in enrollment, according to a recent meeting.

Bob Vecchio is the executive director of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association. He told News 12 that “we need to change the way the state funds education to meet today’s needs.”

One Long Islander finds teaching cuts worrying, telling News 12 that the student-to-teacher ratio could be “astronomical,” which would make it “harder” for teachers.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said 77 districts are getting more money and 44 are getting less. She said when we had the COVID dollars, “we shot way up” and said that money is “in their pockets.”
