The East Ramapo Board of Education held a special meeting Tuesday night.
It came after the districts proposed budget for 2024-2025 was shot down by voters last week, which means board members are now tasked with figuring out what financial plan will go before the public for another vote on June 18.
On Tuesday, the body clashed over the possible price tag and tax increases - but nothing was finalized.
"I would trim back the salaries and benefits. I would increase the tax rate. I would cut down the use of reserves,” said East Ramapo School board member Harry Grossman.
"There's no way we can continue to do a 0% tax increase every year. no way. So I don't agree,” said East Ramapo School board member Sherry McGill.
"I don't think it's worth the risk right now to put up an increase that might get voted down and force us to go into contingency,” said Shimon Rose, president of the East Ramapo School Board.
Members of the audience began to yell their frustrations which caused President Rose motion to adjourn the meeting and it was stopped.
Earlier on, a state appointed monitor warned the board of using millions in reserve funds to balance next year’s school budget.
"In September, two months from now, we're going to begin 2025-2026 and there will be a huge gap,” said Bruce Singer, the state-appointed monitor.
The East Ramapo school board will hold another special board meeting Thursday night when they are expected to make a decision about the next proposed budget.
A school district spokesperson told us that the budget is the Board of Education’s responsibility and said our questions should be addressed to them.
News 12 reached out to the school board for comment and have not heard back.
