Storm Watch

First measurable snow expected for some in the Hudson Valley this weekend.

Lawmakers in Rockland are seeking to bring some relief to drivers at the pump.
County Legislator Ed Day (R-New City), along with three other legislators, want to cap the county sales tax portion of the gas tax at $2 a gallon to help slash prices. If fully implemented, it means a minimum of 11 cents a gallon would immediately come off the price of gasoline. Officials at the county executive?s office say they support the measure, but need to make sure it is legal to initiate a tax cut when the county budget is under a deficit.
Day says the deficit shouldn?t matter because the gas tax is county money that is collected but never budgeted for. Day hopes to give drivers a break by July 1.
