The roof of
popular café in Peekskill collapsed in the middle of the afternoon Wednesday but lucky no one was
injured.
Authorities
say the collapse happened about
2:30 p.m. at Kathleen's Tea Room on Main Street.
According to Peekskill police officials there were
about a half a dozen people inside the cafe including the owner, Peekskill
Deputy Mayor Vivian Mckenzie. Investigators say everyone inside suddenly heard
a loud noise and quickly made the decision to evacuate. It was a smart
decision because it wasn't long after everyone was out of the building that the
roof caved in on the cafe.
A portion of Main Street was completely shut down while
crews worked the scene.
Representatives
from the tea room released a statement that reads, “By now, you may have heard
of the unfortunate accident at the Tea Room today. We are so grateful that no
one was hurt. The safety of our customers and staff is always our first
priority. While the roof may have caved in, our spirits have not. We are
counting our blessings and are grateful for the outpouring of support, love and
prayers you have sent our way. We are working our way through everything and
thank you for your patience as we navigate plans for our future.”
Con Edison crews are on the scene today shutting down the gas because the building has been deemed unsafe.
