The Patchogue-Medford director of athletics says racial slurs were shouted at Pat-Med players after a varsity basketball game Friday night against West Islip.
Director of Athletics Anthony Cracco said in letter that "some fans directed taunts and racial slurs at our players" following the game at West Islip High School.
It does not mention specifics, but the Patchogue-Medford school district calls the incident "unacceptable and deeply troubling."
Parents who spoke to News 12 also expressed concern.
"No matter what happens, you should always be respectful and show respect for a team," said one parent. "Whether you win or lose, sportsmanship is important."
"It's unacceptable for that to take place," explained Medford resident, Anthony Gallo.
In a statement, the West Islip School Superintendent Paul Romanelli told News 12 that the district is investigating the alleged incident.
