Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) has followed through on her promise to reintroduce Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant safety legislation.
The bill calls on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to conduct an independent safety assessment due to the number of mishaps and accidents that have occurred at the plant. Clinton says, ?Restoring public trust in the facility will depend on a more thorough examination of the plant than the NRC is currently conducting.? Clinton is also asking plant owner Entergy to support the study. An independent assessment was conducted by the NRC 10 years ago at a plant in Maine. Both the NRC and Entergy contend that the review is not needed now because the special procedures followed in the Maine assessment have been incorporated into the agency's regular oversight. The bill introduced by Clinton is similar to one introduced by Congressman John Hall (D-Goshen) earlier this week.
