Sen. Chuck Schumer revealed on Wednesday that multiple Hudson Valley law enforcement agencies are owed millions of dollars by the federal government.

He says at least seven departments are all owed money for their contributions to the Westchester DEA Task Force, which works with the federal officials.

"The Department of Justice currently owes the Rockland County Sheriff's Office and several other police departments a major sum in their fair share of over $16 million,” Schumer acknowledged. "It’s the local police who do the really hard, nitty-gritty work to get things done and that is why by federal law when they make a major bust our local departments are supposed to share in some of the proceeds of that bust."

Schumer says he penned a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland asking the Department of Justice to expedite the payment process.

"It’s become unacceptable that they're not coming forth with the equitable sharing that we are entitled to in order to keep our operations running and moving forward and causing less of a burden on the taxpayers of Rockland, Orange, Putnam, Westchester to offset those budgets,” added Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco III.
