A working smoke detector saved a mother and her young daughter from a fire that damaged their home on Viola Road Wednesday, Ramapo police said.
The fire broke out on the second floor of the residence, where the mother and her 2-year-old daughter were asleep. The smoke detector alerted them, and they escaped safely.
One bedroom was destroyed, with heat damage extending to the top floor and attic. Water and smoke damage also occurred on the lower floor.
Three firefighters sustained smoke inhalation while battling the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
