Some Rockland students sweat out long school day
It was business as usual in three out of eight Rockland school districts Tuesday amid blistering heat and no air conditioning.
The East Ramapo, Nanuet and Pearl River districts remained open. The East Ramapo superintendent said the decision to not dismiss classes early was made because parents rely on school administrators to keep their children safe while guardians are at work.
Students said the 90-plus temperatures made it too hard to focus on anything but trying to keep cool. Students were also taking final exams while the weather outside felt more like they should be on summer break.
"It was too hot nobody wanted to be in the classrooms, nobody wanted to be in the school period," said ninth-grader Amber Lanier.
The heat wave is expected to ease up Wednesday when cooler weather prevails. All Rockland schools are expected to have a full day.
