Captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is expected to be arraigned Monday in the Southern District of New York, according to sources who told News 12 he and his wife would be transferred to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn on Saturday night.
Maduro joins a roster of high-profile inmates once held at the facility, including drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, financier Jeffrey Epstein, music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, and Luigi Mangioni.
Business owners near Industry City reported unusual activity at the prison’s rear gate Friday night, similar to what they have witnessed during past transfers of high-profile prisoners.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani criticized the president’s announcement, saying “I called the president and spoke with him directly to register my opposition to this act and to make clear that it was an opposition based on being opposed to a pursuit of regime change, to the violation of federal international law.”
Sources say Maduro could face similar security measures to those used for Guzmán, who was transported in and out of the facility by motorcade during his imprisonment.
