The new state budget agreed to over the weekend proposes doing away with a popular homeowner rebate.
Residents will no longer receive the STAR property-tax rebate checks, which saved New York homeowners more than $1 billion, if the agreement drafted by legislative leaders gets approved.
The nearly $132 billion budget for the state fiscal year that begins Wednesday is more than $10 billion above the current spending plan, but most of that is in federal economic stimulus funds.
