Teachers and staff heading back to school have their own assignment handed down from the state: be vaccinated, or be tested.

Schools statewide are the latest to be given a vaccine mandate.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Thursday that all teachers, administrators and school employees must either be vaccinated against the coronavirus or undergo weekly testing.

The emergency regulation finalized Thursday will apply to all schools in New York state.

While everyone may not be on board, more than half of viewers on News 12's Twitter poll support the move.

Samantha Ciriello, the head of the Yonkers Federation of Teachers, is in a district that already instituted a vaccination-or-testing mandate. She says it is still being ironed out.

"The entire world shut down and we're doing everything we can to make sure we can move towards as normal as normal could be," says Ciriello. "The availability of tests provided to school districts is important in being able to carry out the mandate."

The state is directing districts to handle the weekly testing and to work with local health departments for funding to offset costs.

As of Friday, districts in Rockland County were still trying to work out how to execute mandatory testing.
