New York State Police are teaming up with other agencies in Orange County to find out who has been passing counterfeit $20 bills in the area.
According to police, the suspects use the funny money to buy lottery tickets. Police say delis in Unionville and Hamptonburg have taken the counterfeit money. State police say the counterfeiters even turned in winning tickets they bought with the phony bills.
The suspects tried to buy tickets in two other delis in Orange County, however, police say the cashiers noticed the fake bills and turned them away.
New York State Police Lt. Brian Shortall says they are in contact with authorities in Dutchess County, where arrests were made for similar crimes.
