Racially provocative stickers linked to a white supremacist group have appeared in many communities across Westchester.
The messages, some reading "America first!" and "Better dead than red,” are linked to the white supremacist group the Patriot Front. Residents are especially concerned since that group's members stormed the Capitol in a riot last week.
One of the 13 signs posted throughout the village of Sleepy Hollow was on a light post right outside the police department. Sleepy Hollow is of one of the six communities from Yorktown to New Rochelle hit by the vandals.
Sleepy Hollow Mayor Ken Ray says his officers unknowingly had video images of some of the men they believe posted the hateful stickers months ago.
"Given what happened in our capital last week, we can't ignore this stuff," the mayor says. "We have to come out forcefully and say— not here."
Westchester District Attorney Mimi Rocah is joining forces with local police departments on rooting out hate in Westchester. She stresses that it won't be tolerated.
"No matter how small this seems in the criminal world of statutes, we take this seriously and are going to investigate it," she says.
In the communities where the signs have been spotted, most have been taken down.
Mayor Wray's message to his community is, "If you see something, say something so white supremacists know they don't have a safe haven here."
