Ex-treasurer of Mahopac FD admits to embezzling over $5.5M

A former treasurer of the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $5.5 million from the department.
Officials say Michael Klein admitted to one count of wire fraud, six counts of subscribing to false tax returns, one count of obstructing a grand jury investigation and one count of making false statements.
Klein, 48, told a federal judge that he spent the money on a yacht, a Florida home, antiques and jewelry.
Klein faces 67 years in jail, and he will have to return the items he purchased with the stolen money as part of his plea deal.
