The Carnival cruise ship stranded at sea off the coast of Mexico that includes a group of Yonkers seniors and a county legislator is being towed to California.
Help finally reached the thousands of passengers stranded aboard the Carnival Splendor cruise ship, when tugboats and the USS Ronald Regan aircraft carrier arrived.
The tugboats are currently slowly towing the ship back to San Diego, Calif. while the crew of the USS Ronald Regan are ferrying water and food, mostly Spam and Pop-Tarts, for the stranded passengers.
A fire in the engine room Monday morning knocked out power to the entire ship. Air conditioning remains down and there is no hot food service. Some cabin toilets also remain inoperable, though engineers have been able to restore toilet service in most cabins and all public bathrooms, Carnival says.
The passengers onboard are being entertained with music, trivia contests, board games and a scavenger hunt. The ship is expected to arrive in San Diego by late Thursday.
AP wire services were used in this report.
