Stratford fire chief concludes 25-year career with the department, starts new chapter

Oct. 2 is the final day on the job for Stratford Fire Chief Jermaine Atkinson, who's spent a quarter century working for the department.

Stratford Fire Chief Jermaine Atkinson is signing off after 25 years with the department, four in the top job.

Atkinson's final day is Friday, Oct. 2.

He got his start with the department, then rose up through the ranks. Atkinson said Stratford gave him so many opportunities and now it's time for him to pass the torch to someone else.

"I've enjoyed my 25 years here. What strikes me the most is the forward momentum of the department. The people--they work hard, they look for new ideas," Atkinson told News 12. "I'm confident the department will continue to grow and continue to expand their services.

Though Atkinson is wrapping up his Stratford career, he's not done with the fire service. He's set to be hired as an assistant chief in Hamden.

Deputy Chief Eric Heath will take over as interim chief pending a national search for a permanent replacement.
