Supporters of imprisoned publisher Julian Assange are protesting across the country and around the world today.
Locally, a group that wants Assange freed put up a banner off the Saw Mill Parkway in Dobbs Ferry.
Back in 2010, Assange published classified military and diplomatic cables, including those on the Iraq war, on his website, WikiLeaks.
Assange has been in a London prison for four years, fighting extradition to the U.S., where he faces up to 175 years behind bars on espionage charges.
"I believe that freedom of the press is essential for a democracy, and I feel that Julian Assange, by publishing this information, did not commit a crime but exposed the crimes that others committed," says Joanna Oleson, organizer.
Today is Assange's 52nd birthday.
