Police are searching for a suspect wanted in connection with a series of robberies linked to Facebook Marketplace meetups across New York City, including two incidents in the Bronx.
According to investigators, the suspect targeted people selling items online and arranged in-person meetings under the guise of completing a purchase. Police say three incidents have been reported so far — two in the Bronx and one in Brooklyn.
In one Bronx case, a seller attempting to sell a pair of sneakers was robbed when the suspect allegedly ripped away the victim's backpack and fled.
In a second Bronx incident, police say a victim selling a Nintendo Switch handed over the gaming console after the suspect claimed there was an issue with a Zelle payment. Investigators say the victim never received the money, and the suspect left with the console.
The third incident occurred in Brooklyn, where police say a man selling a watch was robbed at gunpoint after meeting two individuals over what appeared to be a payment dispute.
No injuries were reported in any of the three incidents.
The NYPD released surveillance images of the suspect and is asking for the public's help in identifying him. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
As the investigation continues, police are reminding New Yorkers who use online marketplaces to take precautions when arranging in-person transactions. The NYPD recommends using its designated e-commerce exchange zones, located outside precincts, transit districts and police service areas throughout the city.
Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
