A teenage boy is being hailed as a hero Thursday after he saved his family from their burning home in Maybrook.
Steven Ellis, 15, was in the shower when he says he heard a bang.
?When I opened the door, I looked to my right, I saw nothing but flames and then I looked to my left and saw nothing but smoke,? Ellis says.
Ellis says he quickly sprang into action, helping his father, stepmother and uncle out of the burning home. He says he then checked to make sure his brothers and family dog were also out safely.
Fire officials say an oxygen tank belonging to Ellis? stepmother?s helped fuel the fire and made it hard to battle the flames. The fire destroyed the 301 Clark Place home.
The Red Cross is helping the family find a place to stay. The Salvation Army and neighbors also say they are ready to help.
