A stinky situation in Yorktown has been temporarily cleared up.

Five garbage trucks were repossessed, leaving piles of trash on the curb rotting.

Yorktown's town supervisor says the repossessed trucks were operated by Competitive Carting Corporation. The town had entered into a contract with the company in January saving the town $1.5 million but has since seen many delays in pickup,

Town officials arranged for five additional garbage trucks to ensure garbage and recycling pickups were made on Thursday and Friday.

Yorktown Supervisor Tom Diana released the following statement:
I am pleased to report that I have been able to arrange for five additional trucks to come to Yorktown to assure Thursday and Friday garbage and recycling pickups are made.

Two private carters, who recognized the seriousness of the situation, have agreed to provide the additional trucks and crews after the town’s contractor had five of its trucks repossessed Monday night.

Their willingness to assist our community will enable all pickups to be made thereby averting a potential health emergency as we enter the long holiday weekend.

I am personally committed to working non-stop to bring a long-term solution to the issues created by the performance failures of our current contractor. I appreciate the ongoing patience and understanding of our residents.
