It’s a commute that can be clean and save you some green — but how much can you pocket by carpooling?
But what is the most used mode of transport in New York in 2023? Investopedia crunched the numbers.
“When you are looking at commuter traffic in New York, especially on the bridges and tunnels, where commuter traffic is back to 100% where it was compared to pre-pandemic levels,” says Caleb Silver, of Investopedia. “But not on the other methods of transportation: LIRR traffic only at around 71% in the first few months of 2023, and subways are only around 69% of where they were compared to pre-pandemic levels.”
So with the roads still the favored method, News 12’s Kristie Reeter wanted to find some ways to save.
Searching online she came across a carpooling option via 511 NY Rideshare. You put in where you are and where you’re headed, and you get connected with people looking to carpool. It even has a calculator to show you how much you can save.
A study from the Natural Resources Defense Council estimates that commuters can save between $400 and $1,800 a year by switching to carpooling.
And it comes at a great time during Earth Month, too. 511 NY Rideshare even says that New Yorkers have reduced more than 166,000 tons of CO emissions.
