A road rage confrontation on Interstate 87 escalated into gunfire and an attempted murder charge for a Yonkers man, police say.

The incident unfolded Sunday afternoon after investigators say 28-year-old Elmy Manuel Sandoval-Firpo cut off another driver while turning into a gas station on Tuckahoe Road.

Following a verbal dispute, police say Sandoval-Firpo smashed the rear windshield of the victim's vehicle.

Once both drivers were back on the Thruway, authorities say Sandoval-Firpo rammed the other vehicle and fired a gun at the driver. No one was injured.

Police say Sandoval-Firpo then fled the scene and struck a Yonkers police vehicle that was attempting to stop him.

The pursuit ended when his vehicle became disabled by a flat tire, leading to his arrest.

He faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, attempted assault and reckless endangerment.
