Mount Vernon is now a little more connected after a bridge that was closed for more than a decade finally reopened Tuesday.

The Third Avenue Bridge served as a roadblock between the downtown corridor and South Mount Vernon, but it is now officially open again.

It's adorned with art and features a large pedestrian plaza.

The bridge replaces a crumbling 121-year-old structure and is the latest of four bridges that span Metro-North's New Haven line in Mount Vernon to be replaced by the MTA in three years.

It improves connectivity between the north and south of the city, which is divided by train tracks.

First responders say the new bridge will also impact their response time, which is why the city is also hoping to replace two more aging bridges like the Fulton Avenue Bridge.

That bridge is deteriorated so much that fire trucks can't cross it, and when cars cross, people can actually feel the ground shake.

The city is hoping to tap into federal dollars from the infrastructure bill.
