Connecticut State Senator Herron Gaston is warning the public about a powerful animal sedative frequently detected in Bridgeport street drugs.
Local health officials say they have been tracking Medetomidine for more than a year.
The substance can cause sedation, slowed heart rate and hypotension. It can be deadly, especially when mixed with drugs like Fentanyl.
Stopping Medetomidine use may trigger severe withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, hypertension and anxiety.
“As far as I'm concerned, this is a public health crisis and an emergency. We need to do more education around this, we need to get the word out and we need to ensure that people are informed about what's happening around them,” said Gaston.
Gaston also encourages those at risk of being exposed to the drug to seek assistance and resources.
“If you need to talk to someone, please know that we are available to get you the kind of help and support that you need,” he said.
