Police have arrested a man accused of crashing his car into a Sleepy Hollow deli and fleeing from the scene.
Five people were in the car at the time of the crash at the Horseman Deli on North Broadway. All five fled the scene. The four passengers, three men and one woman, had to go to Phelps Hospital for treatment.
The driver, a man from Sleepy Hollow, turned himself in to police and is charged with a misdemeanor for leaving the scene of an accident.
Police are investigating whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
Co-owners Kristina and Mike Rolon opened the deli in April. "This is devastating to be honest with you. I mean, this has been our lifelong dream to own a deli and to own a restaurant," says Kristina Rolon.
No workers were inside at the time of the crash, but the situation could have been different. "Literally last weekend, they were here at 3 a.m. working on this huge catering order. So, a week later, I mean this could've been a totally different scenario for sure," says Kristina.
The deli co-owners tell News 12 their insurance will only cover the building damage, but they'll have to pay more than $100,000 out of their own pocket to repair everything else. They say they will have to close for several months. They hope to be back up and running by Halloween.
The co-owners have set up a GoFundMe page to assist with repairs.
