Temperatures have officially reached down into the teens, and the winter weather can have an impact on homes.
Bob Minion, manager of Darien's Ring End, says the main thing to tackle are any drafts.
"Garage door seal, if the garage stays cold, the house gets cold so cut that down," said Minion, "where the lumbar meets the concrete that is the most air leak infiltration into the house so if you have an unfinished basement."
Tips to winterize your home:
- Insulate: protect your pipes, and attic, basement and crawl spaces.
- Check the heating system.
- Prepare your outdoor space by cleaning the gutters.
- Weatherize your windows and doors.
Covering pipes can be inexpensive do-it-yourself project and can save you in the long rung.
"These snaps right around an existing pipe, very cheap and inexpensive way to save energy," said Minion, "when they freeze, they don't break but the frozen ice expands the pipe when it thaws, that when the leak starts and then you flood the basement, huge plumbing bill."
