Fitness centers across the country honored a fallen Navy SEAL from Long Island with a Memorial Day weekend workout challenge.
Titan 112 CrossFit in Medford hosted the "Murph Challenge." It is the exact workout of Medal of Honor recipient and former Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy.
“It's just special for us, Michael Murphy grew up a short distance away. He's a hometown hero and we're very proud to host this event,” says Tony D’Gracia, the owner of the gym.
The "Murph Challenge" kicks off with a one-mile run, 100 pushups, 200 pull-ups and 300 air squats.
It finishes with another one-mile run.
“It's not really about the fastest time…It's about just getting out, challenging yourself and getting it done,” D’Gracia says.
Daniel Murphy, Michael Murphy’s father, was a keynote speaker at the event. He says he was proud of his son long before he joined one of the most elite special operations forces in the military.
Daniel Murphy says he’s thankful that his son's memory has brought people together and helped them remember the true meaning behind Memorial Day.
“It's heartwarming and emotional that they're thinking and remembering about Michael and his sacrifice,” he says. “We're not celebrating it as a holiday, it's a solemn occasion to remember our fallen heroes.”
Michael Murphy's motto was "education will set you free.” In honor of this, money raised in the challenge every year goes to the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation.
Last year, the challenge raised more than $250,000 and awarded more than 30 scholarships to students.
