A toddler in New Square died last night after being struck by a minivan while playing in front of her home.
According to authorities, 2-year-old Gitty Swartz was playing in the driveway outside her family's home on Clinton Lane Monday night just before 7 p.m. Police say the girl ran into the road after seeing friends across the street and was struck by a minivan driven by 33-year-old Shaya Walter, also of New Square. The girl was being supervised by her parents at the time.
Police are calling the incident a tragic accident. Ramapo Police Chief Peter Brower tells News 12 an investigation into the incident shows there was no alcohol use or excessive speed on the part of the driver.
