Demolition work is set to commence on the North Avenue Bridge in New Rochelle, part of a three-year, $31.8 million project to replace the bridge located above a section of I-95.
The project, managed by the New York State Thruway Authority, has been underway since January, primarily during daylight hours.
The demolition phase, scheduled to start overnight, will result in two lanes closing in each direction on I-95 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
North Avenue Bridge will have one-way alternating traffic during these hours, and multiple traffic stoppages on I-95 and North Avenue will be necessary for overhead steel removal.
This stage is expected to last approximately three weeks. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes after 8 p.m., with signs providing detour instructions.
The bridge opened back in 1958 and connects North Avenue, Garden Street, Burling Lane, and Station Plaza North. An estimated 20,000 cars travel over the structure every day.
The entire project is slated for completion in the fall of 2025.
