The administration is putting an indefinite hold on legal immigration and asylum applications for people from 39 countries and the Palestinian territories.
The executive order stops visa processing, work permits, green card adjustments and delays citizenship ceremonies for some legal permanent residents.
The policy builds on a previous executive order that reinstated travel restrictions from President Donald Trump’s first term. The order claims countries on the list have broken screening systems - citing poor recordkeeping, corruption and unreliable criminal databases.
The administration points to high visa overstay rates and fraud concerns, saying current safeguards are not enough to prevent threats.
