Three men were hospitalized Monday morning after an argument outside a NYCHA building in the Bushwick Houses escalated into a shoutout and brawl, according to police.
The shooting happened just after 7:52 a.m. near the entrance of the complex, only a few feet from a playground. When officers arrived, they found a 35‑year‑old man and a 65‑year‑old man suffering from gunshot wounds. A third man — identified by police as the alleged shooter — was also injured.
Police identified the two victims who were shot are father and son. Quanell Ricks and his father Vincent Ricks.
"They did not want a fight, and when someone attacks you, it's human nature to fight back," said family member Nate Ricks.
Police say Quanell Ricks was charged with possession of a weapon that they say was a baseball bat.
The shooter, Lawrence Damon, 35, was charged with assault as a hate crime and criminal possession of a weapon.
Although NYCHA crews later cleaned the area, shattered glass and a bullet hole in the front door of the building remained visible, marking the spot where the confrontation unfolded.
Investigators say the three men became involved in an argument that quickly turned violent. The 35‑year‑old suspect allegedly opened fire, striking the two other men. According to police, the victims managed to fight back, hitting the shooter with a blunt object and getting the gun away from him.
Police were seen removing a baseball bat from the scene.
All three men were taken to hospitals and are expected to survive, authorities said.
Residents expressed shock at the violence, especially given the proximity to a children’s play area.
“I’m surprised. I mean, it’s not too bad, but I don’t go anywhere by myself — I always go with my husband,” said Ana, a resident of the complex.
"This is absurd. You know, you're shooting early in the morning? It is early in the morning with kids walking back and forth, school kids going to school," said Nate Ricks.
Police noted that several NYCHA security cameras are positioned near the scene, including three directly above the entrance and additional cameras on the corners of the building. Investigators have not yet reviewed the footage.
