A group of hikers are safe this morning after taking psychedelics made them unable to safely leave an Ulster County hiking trail.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says it happened last Friday near Giant Ledge in the Slide Mountain Wilderness. A 911 satellite text was sent to Ray Brook dispatch via Ulster County from a hiker reporting four people were lost.

The caller admitted the group had consumed mushrooms and one of them was experiencing a bad trip, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation.

Forest rangers and the Pine Hill Fire Department located and rescued the hikers, who were evaluated at the scene.

The group had also lost their car keys and were given a courtesy ride to their rental lodging.

The following day, a ranger hiked back up and found the keys in a sling bag under a log in tall ferns.
