The long battle over the Bronx General Post Office may be over.

News 12 The Bronx has learned that the Grand Concourse building was sold by the United States Postal Service to a major retail developer. Young Woo & Associates is the same developer that failed in its bid to build a retail market place in the Kingsbridge Armory last year.

The 175,000-square-foot building is designated as a city landmark, and has several historic murals and paintings on its interior walls.

Rep. Jose Serrano commented on the sale, saying in part that he strongly opposed selling the historic building. His office says it will work with the new owner to ensure that appropriate community-inclusive development is brought to the site.

It remains unclear what will replace the post office, but the USPS says that a postal retail presence will remain at the site.

The USPS says the historic Bronx site was sold to help the country's mail service, which has been struggling for years due to a decrease in customers and advancement in technology.
