The U.S. Coast Guard, the New York City Fire Department and the New York City Police Department are participating in 'Operation Dry Water,' a national campaign to prevent alcohol and drug related boating accidents.
While many will be at sea this holiday weekend, they'll be keeping a close eye to ensure safety.
Alcohol continues to be the leading cause of boating accidents nationwide, according to the Coast Guard. There were 767 fatalities in 2020 -- a 25% increase from 2019. More than 100 of those cases (18 %) were due to alcohol.
Since celebrations weren't held last year due to the pandemic, Batallion Chief Bob Kehoe says there could be more boats at sea this weekend.
"You're going to have a lot more recreational boats and also the ferries are back in service, the sightseeing tours are back in service. So, there's a lot more boat traffic out here this year," said Kehoe.
