(06/15/06) MAMARONECK ? The U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club kicked off Thursday with a distinct Westchester County flavor.
Winged Foot member Andrew Svoboda started things off as the first player to tee off in the tournament. Svoboda did not appear very happy with his first drive, which took place at 7 a.m. However, some bright spots along the way allowed him to finish the first round at 5 over. Svoboda has won the club championship four times.
Fan favorite Phil Mickelson later started to tackle the course to the delight of many onlookers. Tiger Woods? presence at the tournament also created a definite buzz in the crowd.
