Students at Valley Central High School are taking a stand after administrators decided to ban scarves amid concerns that the neckwear could signal gang affiliation.

Brittney A. Smith was taken aback when she was called to the principal?s office for wearing a scarf in class. Her friend, Brittney M. Smith, says she also got in trouble Monday when she refused to remove her scarf upon request from a school official.

?There's no reason for them not to let us wear scarves,? Brittney A. Smith says. ?It's not disruptive, it's not gang-related, it's not a danger.?

Students also claim they were not aware of the ban on scarves since there is no such rule in the student?s handbook.

A dozen students voiced their disagreement with the ban on scarves during a board meeting Monday night and presented the school board members with a petition.

?We don't want to bash the administration,? says student Amanda Morrissey. ?We simply want to come to an agreement and be heard.?

Many students say that in the meantime, they will continue wearing scarves to school.

The school board has reportedly said it will look at the issue. District officials were not immediately available for comment.
