Exclusive video given to News 12 is offering a glimpse of the frightening moments during a daytime shooting Wednesday in the City of Newburgh that sent two people to the hospital.
The surveillance video shows one woman jump and crouch down for safety as shots are fired Wednesday afternoon on Spring Street, feet away from where she sat on her porch. People nearby are heard screaming in another surveillance clip after police say two people were hit in the gunfire.
A neighbor told News 12 she was woken up by the sound of shots during the incident.
“I heard three or five {shots},” says Erica Martinez. “I hear just like screaming. ‘Help! Help!’”
The double shooting comes on the heels of a triple shooting in the city in July and is the 11th violent incident in Newburgh that News 12 has reported on this year.
“People don’t know how to let other people just exist,” says Gerard Stackhouse.
Despite what appears to be rampant crime, city officials provided News 12 data through a Freedom of Information Law request that shows there were 349 violent crime incidents for the first five months of the year, as compared to more than 1,000 total annual incidents for 2022 and 2023.
Some residents, however, say they’re skeptical and don’t feel safe.
“There’s been more shootings going on recently,” says Stackhouse. “If we could just learn how to not be so self-righteous then maybe we’d be able to get somewhere.”
Another resident who lives near the site of the double shooting didn’t want to speak on camera but says he’s moving because of the violence.
Police say so far, no arrests have been made in Wednesday’s double shooting. They have not identified the people shot but say they suffered injuries that are not life-threatening.
