High tides last night and this morning flooded parts of Jones Beach.
State parks officials told News 12 that water moved around and through the protective sand berms put in place before Hurricane Erin's approach, leaving massive pools of water on top of the sand, which rushed underneath the boardwalk and flooded the other side as well.
"At one point, the entire beachfront was covered with water," New York State Parks Department Long Island Regional Director George Gorman said. "All of the sand was underwater."
Crews are actively digging trenches to funnel the water back into the ocean and pumping more water out of the central mall area. Officials believe they will have most of the area dried out by the end of the day.
"Whenever we see a major storm offshore, although it's hundreds of miles away, we see this flooding," Gorman said.
A swim ban remains in effect for today at Jones Beach, Robert Moses State Park and Hither Hills State Park, Gov. Kathy Hochul's office announced this afternoon.
State park lifeguards and staff found potentially dangerously high surf, rip currents, coastal flooding and beach erosion earlier this week and determined conditions were not safe for swimming.
Gorman said staff will continue to reevaluate when to lift the swim ban on a day-by-day basis.
