Election Day is about two weeks away and the race for Yonkers mayor is heating up.

Mayor Mike Spano is seeking an unprecedented fourth term in office after the City Council voted to extend term limits a second time.

"Yonkers has been stable, very stable moving forward and I want to continue that progress," the incumbent Democrat said.

Spano said he wants to bring in more business and studios like Lionsgate, add housing and improve educational opportunities.

"We have to still shepherd the full gaming, we still have a number of studios left to build, we have parks yet to get constructed and the construction of three new schools," he said.

The scale of some of these projects is what concerns his Republican opponent Anthony Merante – a member of the Yonkers City Council.

"I'm running because I love Yonkers, and I think that Yonkers is in need of change," he said.

Merante said he believes Spano is over developing parts of the city while leaving some residents behind.

"You build it, they will come – but if you flood them, they are going to go," Merante said. "Right now what happened is he's more focused on developers and bringing money in. He's not worried about the people, the forgotten as I call them, the forgotten people."

There is a third candidate for Yonkers mayor listed with the Westchester Board of Elections. News 12 reached out to Allison Abramson, who is running under the Working Families Party, but did not hear back.
