The organization responsible for creating and maintaining a memorial dedicated to Vietnam veterans in one Orange County town is looking to implement additional security after the tribute was vandalized over the weekend for the second time since this summer.

The Wallkill Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Committee is looking to add cameras around the wall to prevent another act of vandalism like the one that damaged the site over the weekend.

Officials say they are shocked and disheartened by this latest act.

Volunteers quickly got together and fixed the damaged parts, but they believe additional security measures are needed to prevent something similar from happening again.

The town's deputy supervisor also serves as the committee's vice president.

He says parts of the wall are made from temporary materials, including metal wrapped over wood. He says he believes somebody took a lot of time targeting and defacing the monument.

Town police are still looking for the person or people responsible.

The committee has been raising money for years to replace the temporary parts of the wall with permanent granite fixtures. A few more pieces are expected to arrive this spring and then the committee will order the remaining parts that need to be made permanent.

They hope to have it wrapped up within two years.
