Walmart is getting in the insulin business and says it will save people up to 75% over what they're paying now.
Beginning this week, the retail giant will begin selling its own brand of insulin for $73 a vial and $86 for a package of prefilled insulin pens.
That's between 58% and 75% less than comparable brands.
New York state Sen. Shelley Mayer says state leaders are trying to help New Yorkers afford the drug. Last year, the New York state Legislature capped insulin co-pays at $100 a month.
One in 10 New Yorkers are living with diagnosed diabetes and nearly 130,000 more are diagnosed a year.
Customers will need a prescription for insulin to buy the new brand. Walmart says it will begin selling it at Sam's Club pharmacies in mid-July.
